There’s really not much I can say about Khalid without sounding like a gushing fanboy, so this will probably be one of the shorter write ups. To start with, Khalid is definitely not a rapper, he’s an R&B artist, and a damn good one at that. His voice is phenomenal, and his music really shows it off. He has a very haunting quality, best displayed in his acoustic cover of Frank Ocean’s “Lost”.
This haunting quality is seen again, but in lesser amounts, in his breakout song “Location”. However, Khalid also makes much more animated songs, such as his recent release “Hopeless”. Khalid has not only range in his voice, but in the style of the music he makes. Which makes a lot of sense, as /u/WackaFlockaGeese astutely points out, he picks really simple beats that let him shape the music to his voice. Much like deM Atlas, it offers him way more in the options of creativity, and it makes it so the song naturally follows the flow of his voice, rather than having to battle out the fight many artists have between the beat and their voice. However, it also means that Khalid’s music is often strikingly simple, lacking a lot of complexity that the most successful R&B artists have.
Khalid is certainly on his way to huge things, as if the 23 million streams on “Location” wasn’t enough of a sneak peak into that. As he continues to develop – which he will, considering he’s only 18 – expect him to be a household name. He’s a great artist and is perfect for y’all corny ass dudes who like to sing along and pretend like you don’t sound like those yelling goats. Give him a look, he’s definitely going to be blowing up in the new year.
